How to choose the right size of the wall picture

Choosing a motif is often the most fun part. But the size? It’s what determines whether the mural looks “professional” in the room – or a bit haphazard. Fortunately, there are some simple rules of thumb that make the choice much easier.
Before you look at sizes, look at the space you actually have available.
Measure the width of the area where the picture will hang (for example, above a sofa, sideboard or bed).
Think about “air” around: pictures that are right next to corners, moldings or curtains often look cramped.
House rule: The wall art should fill approximately 60–75% of the width of the furniture below (sofa/sideboard/bed).
Example: If you have a 240 cm sofa, a picture (or a combination of pictures) of approximately 145–180 cm is often right on target.
This is the most common mistake: choosing images that are too small.
Sofa recommendations (typical choices):
70x100 cm : A safe “statement” format that works in most living rooms
50x70 cm : Best suited for smaller rooms, or if you want to have several pictures in a series
Several pictures in a row : Provides width and calm – especially nice over long sofas
Tip: If the sofa is large, one large picture often looks more exclusive than many small ones.
Above the bed you usually want a calm and balanced expression.
Single image: Choose 70x100 or larger (depending on the width of the bed)
Two images: Two identical ones, for example 50x70 , give a symmetrical expression
Avoid pictures that are too small above the double bed – they “disappear”
Height rule: Hang the picture so that it is 15–25 cm above the headboard (or where the pillows end).
If you have a large, empty wall (for example in a hallway, staircase or living room), you can use the size to create a wow effect.
70x100 provides clear focal point
90x60 / 80x60 works very well as a landscape format
Series of 3–8 images can give a “gallery wall” feel – but plan with templates/paper first
Practical tip: Tape the right size paper to the wall before ordering. This way you can see immediately whether it will be too small or too large.
A classic rule (used in galleries) is to place the center of the image approximately at eye level.
House rule: Center of the picture approximately 145–155 cm from the floor .
Exception: Above the sofa/bed, follow the furniture distance (15–25 cm above).
If you are between two sizes – usually choose the larger one. Large wall pictures provide:
more “gallery” feel
better balance against furniture
a calmer and more holistic expression
Small images work best when they are part of a planned series or a gallery wall.
Small wall / small space: 30x40, 40x50
Above chest of drawers / as part of a series: 50x70
Above sofa / as main picture: 70x100
Large wall / lots of air: 70x100 or larger, possibly a series
